Treatment or removal of eyelid cysts and styes

Eyelid cysts

A chalazion is a swollen bump or cyst in the eyelid. This can be caused if the eyelid meibomian gland becomes blocked or inflamed and can be linked with blepharitis.

A stye (also known as external hordeolum) is an infection of  the base of an eyelash follicle at the outer edge of the eyelid. This can feel like a small painful lump.

My approach to eyelid cysts and styes

The conservative approach is to try a course of treatment which often resolves it in a few weeks.  This can involve applying warm compresses, massage and lid hygiene plus medication.

If necessary, surgical removal of a cyst is usually done using local anaesthetic to numb the area around your eye and turn your eyelid inside out.

I will cut or scrape the cyst away using micro instruments.

It is performed as a day case and you go home after the procedure – you will have an eye patch for around 6 to 8 hours and it is not recommended you drive in that time. You will be given antibiotic cream to use in the weeks following the surgery.

Other treatment could include a steroid injection in the eyelid.

An initial consultation will establish the best treatment for you. If surgery is the best option it can be done the same day* or later and the consultation cost will be included in the package price.

If conservative treatment is recommended rather than surgery then an initial consultation fee will be charged only.

Following the surgical procedure we will also supply drops or antibiotic cream.

I may recommend that a sample of tissue is sent for pathology which is charged extra.

A follow up consultation is additional, if necessary.

*Please note that surgery or same day surgery is only offered at Skin55 Ltd, Harley Street.  Initial consulations and non-surgical treatments are available at other locations below, with surgery scheduled later.
