Foresight - eye health screening

FORESIGHT – gold standard eye screening delivered by a specialist eye doctor (ophthalmologist)

Regular eye screening is the best way to detect potentially sight-threatening eye conditions. Sometimes these conditions go unnoticed in their early stages as eyes don’t always cause pain when there is a problem. Early detection and timely treatment can often prevent permanent vision loss.

Your eyes should be checked at least every 2 years, or earlier if your doctor or optician recommends.

Screening is especially important if you have:

Diabetes. If you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes or have a family history of diabetes, you should get the back of your eye checked every year.

• Family history of conditions that threaten sight such as glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Glaucoma is irreversible and is a leading cause of blindness – early treatment is very effective at controlling pressures and allowing you to live normally. AMD can start to appear in your 50’s and 60’s and is caused by environmental and hereditary factors – it can significantly reduce your sight if not treated. Dry AMD can happen gradually over years whilst wet AMD can affect your vision within weeks or months.

More than 55 years of age with no previous eye problems – you should still be regularly screened for early cataracts, AMD and other age related conditions

High myopia (more than -6.00 dioptres) – you have a higher risk of retinal detachment

Foresight - affordable, comprehensive eye screening

Foresight is a comprehensive eye examination by Dr Marinescu costing £350 (only available at 55 Harley Street). It includes all diagnostic tests and a consultation with a written report. It offers a wider range of tests that those offered by opticians and usually takes about 60 minutes.

The combination of tests will depend on your medical history and eye history and can include:

Visual fields analysis – checks your peripheral vision
Optical Coherence Tomography – this scans the anterior and posterior segments of your eye and creates detailed maps to identify problem areas
Applanation tonometry - detects glaucoma, measuring your eye pressures by gently touching the surface of your eye.
Pachymetry -  This test uses ultrasound to measure cornea thickness. Thin corneas can lead to false low-pressure readings and thick corneas can lead to false high-pressure readings.
Pupil dilation – we may put drops in your eyes to expand your pupil size to examine them more thoroughly using an ophthalmoscope.
Amsler Grid test -  This is important to detect signs of AMD
• Retinal Photographs for diabetic retinopathy

Why choose Foresight over optician eye examinations?
• If an optician has concerns about your eyes they need to refer you to an ophthalmologist and or/your GP – this can delay diagnosis and treatment
• Ophthalmologists are fully trained doctors with 6 years of basic medical school and at least 5 more years of specialist training
• As part of the Foresight package, the ophthalmologist can diagnose immediately after examination and quickly organise further specialist treatment and interventions, if needed.
• Your eyes are part of your brain – a specialist ophthalmologist is trained to identify subtle signs of neurological disorders or connective tissue disease that can be revealed in your eye. If signs are found, rapid investigations can be arranged for you.
• Eye examination can also identify other medical issues such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure – blood tests and investigations can be arranged.
